So I just completed Sky Castle and will like to share my thoughts on this amazing drama. I avoided it for some time (Maybe didn’t wanna watch any family shenanigans🤷‍♀) but later decided to give it a shot and it was worth it. I highly recommend this drama to those who need a break from the usual romantic dramas. Now let’s explore the Castle🤩

Loaded with wonderful in-jokes, energetic action, and a wonderful break from the crowd of comic book movies flooding the market, Sky High is a fun.

Synopsis

This story revolves around the luxurious lives of families living in a high society residential called Sky Castle. Parents in this residence struggle for their children to attain higher grades in other to make in into the Seoul National University Medical School. They do everything to make their children continue their families’ legacies as doctors.

Characters

Han Seo-Jin

Strong and determined woman who is willing to do anything to get her daughter into the SNU Medical School. She does this to to fulfill her own ambitions and to gain favor and acceptance from her mother-in-law. Han Seo-Jin also supports her husband to gain promotions at work. Her charisma is being admired by Jin Jin-Hee who tries to follow her lead.

No Seung-Hye

Elegant woman who at first is obsessed with getting her twins in to the SNU Medical School . She appears to be frightened by her husband but musters up the courage to stand up to him as the story develops. She empathizes with others and is willing to protect her children against anything that could cause them their happiness.

Jin Jin-Hee

She is ambitious and sucks up to those who she thinks could be of help to her family in the future. She has a blabbermouth and can’t keep secrets. She instigates others into taking actions either good or bad which is very annoying sometimes. She is caring though.

2020

Lee Soo-Im

A very Warm hearted lady who shows affection to people around her. She doesn’t really subscribe to the ideas and traditions of the residents at Sky Castle. Unlike the other residents, she sees her son’s happiness as a priority and gives him the chance to study at his own pace.

Kim Joo-Young(Coach Kim)

Coach Kim is one character I couldn’t read through easily. She is mysterious and uses others emotions and desperations to manipulate them. She is being hired by parents to help their children gain admission into the SNU Medical School. Coach Kim sometimes incites her students to take revenge on their desperate parents. She always tries to cover up her painful past.

Plot

Sky Castle has a well constructed plot with one event leading to the other. I thought it might be a bit difficult to grasp the story because of the different family settings but no. Characters are being introduced well in the first episode which enabled me to get set for the show  . As the drama unfolds, you realize that each scene or event was crucial for the development of the story. This drama doesn’t contain much loopholes. Almost all my questions were answered by the end of the drama. The writer tried as much as possible to make viewers understand the role of each character and their behaviors. I can’t really say it has a perfect plot but they did an admirable job.

My Overview of the Story

Han Seo- Ji paid a huge sum of money to hire Kim Joo-Young to coach her daughter, Kang Ye-Seo into the SNU Medical School. Even after discovering how mysterious and dangerous coach Kim could be, she still held on to her decision which finally cost them a lot as a family.

No Seung-Hye’s husband, Cha Min-Hyuk was also obsessed with social hierarchy and used the pyramid as a symbol to always remind his twins how it’s important to get to the top. The strict learning environment he created at home later lead to some problems in their family too. His daughter has to lie about gaining admission into Harvard just to receive his attention and love.

Jin Jin-Hee was also making ways for her ward to get into the SNU. She always nags the boy to study hard.

My Thoughts

The story is so great, I felt like I was watching mini dramas within a drama. Like you want to know what happens next in every family and how each family affects the other families. It was a bit intense for me, there were scenes that really broke my heart but with it numerous comic relief, I bursted out laughing at some points. The casts did a marvelous job in bringing this story to life. They all portrayed their roles so well making the drama very realistic. There was no exaggeration of characters and the humor aspect was well executed.

Sir you are being hunted free download. I think the writer did so well to touch on serious and sensitive issues in a light hearted manner. Parents obsession with their wards making it into the best universities was outlined in this drama. You could see that the parents are ready to do anything at all cost to make this happen.

I mean encouraging your kids to study is a good thing but shouldn’t they have the chance to choose the path/ career they want to pursue? Aside Kang Ye-Seo who was smart and passionate about being a doctor, most of the other kids had different ambitions. Using your wards to compete with others or as revenge tools is just sad.

What I didn’t like

The story became a little draggy after ep 16. No major events really happened, but all the same, the last episode helped end the drama in a beautiful way :ok_hand:

P.S: Don’t miss out on this intriguing story  :two_hearts: :two_hearts:
