Tetris Ultimate is a puzzle video game developed by American studio SoMa Play and published by Ubisoft. Ubisoft partnered with The Tetris Company to develop the game to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Tetris franchise.

Gameplay

Tetris Ultimate on Nintendo 3DS features seven modes, including a new single-player Challenge mode. Other versions offer six different game modes.

Release

Tetris Ultimate was first released in November 2014 for the Nintendo 3DS as retail game and as digital download in the Nintendo 3DS eShop. In December 2014, the game became available as a digital download for Xbox One and PlayStation 4. In 2015, the game was released for PlayStation Vita.Animal jam play now.

Because of the release of Tetris Ultimate, Nintendo removed the 1989 Game Boy version of Tetris and the digital download of the 2011 game Tetris: Axis from the Nintendo 3DS eShop in December 2014. Since January 2014, Ubisoft holds the license rights for PlayStation 4 downloadable versions of Tetris.

As of February 2019, Tetris Ultimate has been delisted on all platforms and neither the game or its DLC are available digitally, but the Ubisoft website states that both the servers and Ubisoft Club features are still active.

Reception

Critical response to Tetris Ultimate was mixed. GameSpot gave the game a 7/10, praising it for being a good version of Tetris, as well as the extensive customization options, stating 'If all you want is a good version of classic Tetris for your new console, this one will suit your needs well'. However, he also criticized the bugginess of the online play and the lack of innovation or new modes. The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions were also criticized for the multitude of issues in the online modes.

OBJECTIVE

The goal of Tetris is to score as many points as possible by clearing horizontal lines of Blocks. The player must rotate, move, and drop the falling Tetriminos inside the Matrix (playing field). Lines are cleared when they are filled with Blocks and have no empty spaces.
As lines are cleared, the level increases and Tetriminos fall faster, making the game progressively more challenging. If the Blocks land above the top of the playing field, the game is over.

CONTROL OPTIONS & SCORES

GENERAL GAMEPLAY INFO

GOAL – Put your organizational skills and endurance to the test by clearing as many lines as possible.

CLEAR LINES – Maneuver the falling Tetriminos to fit them together within the Matrix. To clear a line, fill every square within a single row.

SCORE POINTS – Earn points by clearing lines. Clear multiple lines at once to increase your scoring opportunities.

GHOST PIECE – Use the Ghost Piece to determine the best fit for the falling Tetrimino. This helpful guide appears directly below the falling Tetrimino and displays possible placements.

NEXT QUEUE – Preview the upcoming Tetrimino in the Next Queue to plan ahead and increase your scoring opportunities.

HOLD QUEUE – Store a falling Tetrimino in the Hold Queue for later use.

GAME OVER – Stack the Tetriminos too high and the game is over!
